What is ARDMS?

The American Registry for: Diagnostic Medical Sonography* (ARDMS), incorporated in June 1975, is an independent/nonprofit organization that administers examinations and awards credentials in the areas of diagnostic medical sonography, diagnostic cardiac sonography and vascular technology.

RDMS* Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographer*
RDCS* Registered Diagnostic Cardiac Sonographer*
RVT* Registered Vascular Technologist*

Specialty areas within the sonographer credentials include Abdomen, Breast, Neurosonology, Obstetrics and Gynecology, and fetal echocardiography (RDMS); adult, pediatric and fetal echocardiography (RDCS); and noninvasive vascular technology (RVT).

Recognition of ARDMS practices has earned all ARDMS credentials to be accredited by the National Commission for Certifying Agencies (NCCA). ARDMS has certified (more than 45,000 individuals and has become a recognized standard for diagnostic medical ultrasound credentialing by many facility accreditation programs.

ARDMS credentials document personal achievement of recognized professional standards. Credentials awarded by ARDMS are widely accepted in the medical community by ultrasound and vascular professional organizations, including:

American College of Radiology
American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine
American Society of Echocardiography
Canadian Society of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers
Joint Commission on Allied Health Personnel in Ophthalmology
Society of Diagnostic Medical Sonography
Society for Vascular Ultrasound

The only-means of obtaining an ARDMS credential is by examination; Required examination prerequisites must be met before an applicant can take an ARDMS examination. Applicants are then required to pass two comprehensive examinations to earn a credential:

  1. a physical principles and instrumentation examination, and
  2. at least one corresponding specialty examination.

ARDMS Exam Preparation Courses

ARDMS Examinations

Below is a brief description of the examinations offered by ARDMS. Detailed content outlines, practice examinations and sample questions for each examination are available online.

All physical principles/instrumentation examinations (ultrasound physics and instrumentation, cardiovascular principles and instrumentation physics, and vascular physical principles and instrumentation examinations) are two-hour's long and contain approximately 120 multiple-choice questions.

The Abdomen, Breast, Neurosonology, Obstetrics and Gynecology, and Fetal Echocardiography specialty examinations for the RDMS credential are three-hours long and contain approximately 170 multiple-choice questions.

The adult echocardiography, fetal echocardiography and pediatric echocardiography specialty examinations for the RDCS credential are three-hours long and contain approximately 150 multiple-choice questions each. The first section of the examination relates to a set of video cases, some with Doppler. After a video case is viewed, candidates answer related multiple-choice questions.

The vascular technology specialty examination for the RVT credential is three-hours long and contains approximately 170 multiple-choice questions.

Our Cardiovascular Courses are approved for CMEs by the Society of Vascular Ultrasound (SVU).

The Burwin Institute offers three different groups of didactic, correspondence courses in medical diagnostic ultrasound applications aimed at allied health professionals. Our courses serve three objectives, namely providing basic theoretical education, preparing eligible candidates to successfully challenge certification examinations, and providing continuing medical education (CME) credit hours necessary to maintain professional credentials.

Methodology

Students are provided with comprehensive notes which include diagrams, references, exercises, and assignments. Some courses also have a comprehensive image atlas and/or case videotape. Feedback on student learning is based on a series of assignments which are sent to the course instructor at regular, scheduled intervals. Assignments consist of multiple choice questions. Assignments are marked and returned to students with an answer key and short explanation to difficult questions. Instructors respond in writing to questions raised by students and sent in with their assignments. Successful completion of an assignment is a grade of 70% or higher. Each assignment has a specific point value towards the course grade. In every course, assignments have a total value of 30% towards the final course grade,

A "closed book" examination is taken by students at the end of the course. The examination is worth 70% of the course grade. The passing grade for every course is 70%. Students must obtain a passing grade to get a Burwin course certificate. Examinations are written in a local institution. Students identify an invigilator (exam supervisor) acceptable to Burwin and the exam is sent to the invigilator. After the examination is written, the invigilator returns the examination to Burwin for marking

The final examinations provide excellent opportunities to write registry-style examinations under exam room conditions. The final examination paper arid marked answer sheets returned to the student and can be used as an effective study tool.

Burwin courses are offered continuously and take approximately 4 months to complete. An assignment and examination schedule is provided with each course. Students are required to send assignments according to the schedule dates. Assignments are sent to the instructor by regular first class mail service, special delivery, courier service, or by FAX transmission. Mailing or communication costs by students to Burwin instructors are the responsibility of students.

WHICH COURSES SHOULD TAKE TO BECOME REGISTERED?

RDMS - Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographer (ARDMS)

Ultrasound Physics & Instrumentation #002
Abdomen - Part 1 #003
Abdomen - Part 2 #004

OR

Ultrasound Physics & Instrumentation #002
Gynecological Ultrasound #005
Obstetrical Ultrasound #006

OR

Ultrasound Physics & Instrumentation #002
Neurosonology Part 1 #008
Neurosonology Part 2 #009

Important Points

The RDMS credential is given if a candidate passes Ultrasound Physics & Instrumentation and at least one of five specialty examinations -Abdomen, Obstetrics/Gynecology, Neurosonology, Breast, or Ophthalmology Use the LINK button to go to the ARDMS*home page.

A student may choose to register in more than one course at time depending of their personal and work situation,

Part 1 and Part 2 courses may be taken separately or together however Part 2 should not be taken before Part 1

Both Gynecological Ultrasound: and Obstetrical Ultrasound should be taken to prepare for the Obstetrics’ & Gynecology registry 'examination.

Ultrasound Physics & Instrumentation may be taken before, at the same time, or after the specialty courses. This is basically a student preference. In general, it is better for most students to take the specialty courses before the physics course. When the specialty courses are completed, the student should apply for the pertinent registry examination. When the specialty examination is passed, the student can then focus on Ultrasound Physics & Instrumentation. It is easier to understand the principles of physics when the student has already learned the applications in the specialty exams.
